Thanks to the success of the 4+ last fall, the UCD Men’s crew were able to send another Davis boat to the 53rd Head of the Charles. Senior coxswain Patrick Leahy, juniors David Parks, Sungmin Park, Aidan Sandhoefner, and sophomore Ian Menk travelled to Boston this weekend to once again represent the Aggies at one of the most exciting spectacles in the rowing world. The “Boston Four” joined a field of nearly 10,500 athletes comprised of juniors, masters, alumni, former Olympians, and fellow collegiate clubs.
The Aggies were bow number 3 and given the third starting spot in the time trial format. Of the 40 boats in their event, the UCD men placed 18th, beating out fellow west coast crew UCLA and other strong east coast teams. Their time automatically qualified the team for a spot in the next HOCR.
While the regatta itself was undoubtedly amazing, the 4 day trip was only possible through the generosity of the families and friends who had so graciously supported the crew. While not racing, the crew found lodging in the lovely home of Beth and Mike Girioni, who took it upon themselves to provide seemingly endless food and comfortable housing. Jim and Kelly Fitzpatrick, family of one of last year’s HOCR competitors Devon Fitzpatrick, also stepped up to the challenge of feeding rowers, providing the crew an impromptu feast as well. Coxswain Patrick Leahy’s brother, Kevin Leahy, was another supporter of the team, as he and his bandmates took the team around town to see the Boston eateries as well after watching the race. Alumni including Andrew Lally and even Seth Weil made appearances to cheer their school on from the bridges. These people, and of course our family and team back home in Davis, made this Head of the Charles an absolutely unforgettable experience and the Aggies cannot thank them enough. Thank you, and we hope to see you all again soon!
